There is often a particular mixture of excitement and apprehension when people arrive for a Drum Birthing day.

They are excited, of course. They have chosen to spend a day creating something deeply personal - a drum that will be entirely their own.

But alongside that excitement there is often another thought quietly lurking:

What if I can’t do it?

For some, it is the physical crafting that feels daunting. Perhaps they don’t think of themselves as particularly practical or creative. Perhaps they have seen beautifully finished drums and are already wondering whether theirs will somehow measure up.

And sometimes there is another layer too - the desire to create the perfect drum.

The perfect colour.
The perfect handle.
The perfect lacing.
The perfect finished shape.

Yet one of the things I love most about Drum Birthing days is watching all of that gradually soften.
